Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Youth engagement is a critical strategy in preventing radicalization, especially in regions where young people may be vulnerable to extremist ideologies. In Gombe LGA, Gombe State, youth engagement programs such as peace clubs have been employed to provide alternatives to violent extremism and radicalization (Abdullahi & Usman, 2023; Kolo et al., 2024). These clubs focus on promoting peaceful coexistence, offering educational workshops, and providing a platform for young people to discuss issues that may lead to frustration or alienation. The role of these programs in preventing radicalization remains an important area of study, as they have been credited with empowering youths and giving them a sense of belonging. Despite the positive impacts, there is a gap in understanding the specific role that peace clubs play in preventing radicalization, particularly in a complex socio-political environment like Gombe LGA. This study seeks to examine how youth engagement through peace clubs influences the prevention of radicalization in Gombe LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While peace clubs in Gombe LGA have been recognized for their role in fostering peace and addressing youth alienation, their direct impact on preventing radicalization has not been fully assessed. Radicalization remains a significant threat in Nigeria, with many youths vulnerable to extremist ideologies due to socio-economic and political challenges (Aliyu & Adamu, 2023; Salihu et al., 2024). The issue arises from a lack of empirical evidence on the effectiveness of peace clubs in preventing the radicalization of youths and offering them viable alternatives to violent extremism. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the role of youth engagement, through peace clubs, in preventing radicalization in Gombe LGA, with a focus on the challenges and successes of these programs.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it offers insights into the role of youth engagement in preventing radicalization, with a focus on peace clubs as an effective model. By exploring the impact of these programs, the research will provide valuable data that can guide policymakers, local government authorities, and NGOs in enhancing youth-focused peace initiatives. The findings will contribute to the broader discourse on preventing radicalization and provide practical recommendations for strengthening youth programs in Nigeria and similar contexts.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses specifically on Gombe LGA and examines the role of peace clubs in preventing radicalization among youth. It does not address other forms of youth engagement or other LGAs in Gombe State.
